'55 or later car starters are going to  be 12 volt with a solenoid.  Have
you converted the truck to 12 volt?  If you are trying to run a 12 volt
starter with 6 volts I'd expect some issues.

The 6 volts might not trigger a 12 volt solenoid.

And its possible the added current draw at 6 volts could exceed what
something in the starter or solenoid can carry.

If you've converted to 12 volts though these are non-issues.

i have a '48 fs3800 flat bed. the origional 216 went bad and i have replaced
it with a 235/6 from a '57 car. the starter moter worked to begin with . but
now just clonks and won't turn the engine over. i have replaced the solenoid
,but it still just clonks . on a bench test the starter works fine but on
the
truck it won't turn over. any ideas? also the serial no on the starter makes
it a '56 is this the same as a'57 ?vwould it fit the '57 flywheel ? or havbe

got big problems here?
