Bobby,
These heads are not the double hump heads. Those are #3782461. Yours are the
"283 power-pack" heads. They have 60cc chambers, so give a higher
compression than the double hump (62cc) or other heads (64cc-75cc). The
heads have small valves...1.72" intake and 1.5" exhaust. You'll get good low
end torque, but your rpms will be limited and your horsepower will be lower
(than heads with larger valves). The double-hump heads have large valves
(1.94"intake or 2.02" intake, depending on the year and application, and
1.50" to 1.60" exhausts, again depending on the application).
This head was used on the 1965 Chevy passenger, Chevelle, and Chevy II,
283's. I have a pair on my 1968 327.

Subject: [oletrucks] Motor ID
I've never been able to make heads or tails of the web sites I have found
for ID of a chevy engine so I'll ask the combined expertise of this group.
I have what is supposed to be a mid-60s 283 that has been sitting for many
years following a complete rebuild (never run after rebuild). The engine
was taken from a 1965 Pickup, but it may not have been original? This past
weekend my dad, brother and I checked and sure enough the motor will turn
over (by hand with a pry bar across two bolts on the harmonic balancer).
Inside the cylinders/heads looks fine (when looking through the spark plug
hole). We got the following number and wonder what we really have. Can
anyone take the time to help?
Block 3849852 seems to indicate a 283 from 1957-66
This wide range of dates is not very helpful. I think that we may
need to find additional numbers that may be convered with paint.
Head V1
GM13
3795896
K143
The heads were not the original head on the above block. As far as I
could tell this indicates a 1963-65 283 head with 60cc chambers, but I
cannot tell what they originally came off of (if that is possible). These
numbers were at various places under the valve cover.

Intake 18436572 The 7 and 2 are educated guesses as the
area
was damaged by past grinding
8788244
GM 2
1282
Any help is most certainly appreciated.
