Bob, torque tubes had to allow axle to "roll" in operation. The front mount
of driveshaft on them was a pivot.
You wont have that with open drive and will want the rear to be solid to
springs or it will flop around and want
to torque twist when taking off. You can buy new pads from any spring shop.
Usually they are slightly wider than stock
and u-bolts may not be up tight to springs on side. I never had problem with
that. AND, stovebolt engine co.com has or had
adapters that were narrower to match the springs and had an offset hole in
them to move axle back slightly to match the
original fender location of tires. Using upper arm links will require a good
pivot so it don't bind when compressing. You would have to make a bracket on
frame for that. Would have to be figured pretty good!? The orig ones from
later cars
were very short, and would have to be long on truck to reach anything. May
mess the whole pivot arc up. Go with the new
pads and weld to your tube.
