Here's some help I'd like to share with others here, who are about to
install a new headliner in their AD truck. Hopefully it will prevent much
anguish!
Dusty and I struggled with installing that @#$%!**&!! cardboard headliner
all Saturday! It uses the 'floating' type of cross piece. Seems the key to
doing it successfully (after getting it halfway done several times) is to
align the FRONT part of the headliner FIRST, using the big screws from the
sunvisor mounts loosely in their holes to locate it properly, a MUST if it
is to fit at the front of the cab. Then slip that piece of headliner into
the upper part of the crosspiece, closer to the ceiling, as opposed to the
other way 'round (the crosspiece can go either way, but one way is
impossible to fit the headliner halves as you cannot see what you're doing).
Then slip the rear half of the headliner into the lower slot of the
crosspiece, and align it at the rear where the retaining strip can be
positioned at the top rear of the cab. If you're lucky and you have several
hands to hold it in place, the slots of the headliner's rear edge will allow
the screw holes in the ceiling to be exposed. The rest is easy. If the holes
are NOT exposed, in other words, the headliner is extending too far
rearward, you need to really be sure it is seated all the way into the
center floating crosspiece, as it might appear to do so, but not be in all
the way. You might have to actually poke a hole through the cardboard in a
couple places with an awl to make it fit the rear, as the pattern is not
precise and the screw holes are always just a half-hole away. Have fun!
