Hi All!
To help Rob the firing order for all 216, 235, and 261 inline 6 cylinder
motors, again according to my trusty Motors Manual is 1-5-3-6-2-4. The
valve order from front to back is E - I - I - E - E - I - I - E - E - I -
I - E. The following is a direct quote out of the book regarding the
adjusting of the valves.
Six Cyl. with Solid Lifters
"Run the engine at a slow idle speed and adjust valve clearance to the
specifications given"
I have set my valves both ways engine running and engine stopped. I find
that I get better results when I do it with the engine running. It does get
a little messy but it is actually quite easy to do. Just pay close
attention to where your hands, arms and tool are in relation to the fan as
the fan is unprotected and spinning while you are doing this.
