Follow the instructions of the paint manufacturer. Most all recommend a
thorough wash with detergent and water. After drying, wipe it down with wax
and grease remover made by the paint people. This is very important. Wipe
the surface again with a tack rag and you're ready for primer.
Decide which refinishing system you want to use. Some primers will not seal
and contact with moisture will cause rust if not top coated promptly. Epoxy
primers don't require etching primer and will seal the surface. This is
good if you're not going to finish coat right away. Filler can be applied
over epoxy primer, also.
