They work fine without the normal gasket, but with a bead of silicone
sealant around
the outer surface, away from the O-ring. I have one on a Ford 289 and two
SB Chevys
with no leakage problems.
The best IMHO thermostat housing is an original cast iron type. These off
shore produced
pot metal types seem to dissolve in what appears to be a short time, using
either straight
H2O or the normal 50% anti-freeze solution.
