Ric,
I don't know about out on the West Coast but here in Michigan you can get a
cracked block or heads welded and refinished. I had both heads on my '68
Buick GS 400 welded about 2 years ago and they are still holding up. The
cost was not cheap, but I couldn't find the high compression heads that I
needed. It cost about $200.00 including all new valve seats and valve job
and gaskets. You might want to check around in your area.
