I believe that 6 volt radio speakers are 4-ohm units, not the 8-ohm standard
of 12 volt. The 12 v speakers will probably work, but not as well due to the
higher resistance value. You won't hurt anything by using them, really. Since
I've never had a working 6-volt vehicle radio to play with ( well, I do have
an old Ford radio somewhere that says 6v on it, but I've never tried it ), I
don't know how well it'll operate. good luck!

Only thing you have to match is the voice coil impedance - it will be either
3 ohms (older radios) or 8 ohms (newer models); most likely, the speaker
from the 12V radio will work. The operating voltage of the radio has nothing
to do with the speaker.
Also be sure the 1946 radio did not require an electrodynamic speaker, which
uses an electromagnet (field coil) instead of a permanent magnet; in which
case you cannot use a modern speaker unless modifications are made to the
radio.

w/no major rust but looks as if it has sat for quite a while. The
license plate was from the late 70s. It looks complete. I made an offer,

I had the original 15" split rims on my truck, and swapped them out for Ford
16" solid rims, readily available at any junk yard. I had to use 1/4 inch
spacers on the front, and plan to buy the clips to attach for Chevy hub
caps. I got big tubeless tires, that can be easily fixed if I get a flat,
and the larger diameter gives me considerably better gas mileage and speed
for a given RPM. And they look great. That would be my suggestion . . .

Hey, I've been thru that! Actually, I'm doing that right now...one of
them broke on my 59 extended cab last fall, when my wife was driving the
truck, and I just haven't gotten around to fixing it till now. I'm
putting a "new" overhauled 454 in it to replace the tired one, and while
I have the truck in the shop I ought to fix the shock...
I ordered 4 new shocks from Chevy Duty, and they said they were on back
order. Surprise...they showed up the following week. I have a used
bracked from another frame I had cut up. So, I just have to cut the
rivets off and bolt the bracket on. The replacement bracket is quite
rusty on the backside, so I hope it doesn't break right away.
On my other 59, I had a front shock bracket break off a long time
ago...the shock go under the axle while driving down the road...lifted
the truck up several inches, quite a surprise! Back then (early 80s)
you could still buy replacement brackets at the local Chevy dealer, they
had them in stock, so that's what I did. I replaced both of them, and
they are still in great shape 20 years and 100k+ miles later.
Hopefully, I'll get the engine going in the truck today or tomorrow, and
then I really ought to fix the kingpins, the brakes, service the tranny,
get some new front tires on it, and do something about the paint...the
primer is going away fast.

taking it anywhere to have new tires, repairs, etc. done. What is the best
plan of attack? Why do they think that extra 1/4 of a ton demands the need
for 2 extra lugs and a 2 piece design?

you don't want to deal with that take your rims to a real tire store that
changes truck tires.
I have never heard of the "suicide" rim in 8 lug, GM only used it in 10 lug.
Your 8 lug rims should be of the "split ring" variety. The outer rim snaps
off to replace the tire.
"suicide rims" dismount by coming apart in the center of the rim.
A truck tire shop will know how to inspect and assemble your rims to be sure
they are safe.

Adam,
Look for a truck junkyard and tell them you need a set of ten lug rims for a
1-1/2 ton GMC. GM used this lug pattern for many years.
Just be sure they don't sell you a set like you already have, the 3 piece
rims are what you are looking for.
I also belive the 10 lug rims from a new 3500HD will fit, the lug spacing is
the same but I have never tried to install one.

I went to work on the broken shock bracket on my 59 extended cab truck,
and learned something new. The upper front shock mount brackets on Task
Force trucks were apparently redesigned for the 1958 model year. The
"new" used bracket I installed on my truck came from a 57 frame, and
looks to be a much better design. The 59 bracket is much more flat,
while the 57 bracket has a deeper channel design. I looked at other
truck frames I have around the yard, and found that the better brackets
were on both 57s, and the lousy brackets were on a 58 and the 59s. The
GM replacement brackets I bought long ago are the newer lousy design
also.
So, if you have a 58 or 59 truck, and you do a lot of driving on rough
roads (I live on a dirt road, and also did when the brackets broke on my
other 59 long ago), you may have your upper shock brackets break off
sometime. It wouldn't hurt to take a look at them, you may be able to
see a crack forming just below the shock mounting hole. The crack forms
from the middle, then moves to the edges as the bracket breaks off. You
might be able to reinforce the brackets by welding some steel bar or
angle iron on them, but it would probably be better to replace the
brackets with the earlier design, if you can find some. Also, I drilled
out the rivet holes to 7/16" and used that size bolt to attatch them, so
they would be as strong as possible.

Also, I discovered that the front shocks from Chevy Duty are actually
just Monroe-Matic 31000 shocks, which my local parts store can get, but
they are not listed in their catalog as fitting these trucks.

Chevy used the car ID tags for early trucks. Stylemaster was a car line for
47. that would make it an Art Deco truck. Nothing special there. 47 AD

Got it converted to 12v pos ground, got it started, road tested it.
Oil pressure gauge reads allmost 60psi. I think either the thermistat
is stuck open or has been removed.
Figured out how to solve the fuel line problem. The short line from
the tank's stopcock, to the metal fuel line leaked. I had a regular
pipe threaded nipple to install, but the threads were wrong. Turns out
a small piece of metal brakeline has the correct threads. I cut and
smoothed it, slipped some rubber fuel on it, and problem solved.
Plan. . .
Can I get a thermistat at the local auto parts store?
2 speed axle doesn't work, any suggestion on where to start?
Cant budge the knob to shift the PTO, so can't raise the bed.
Confused with the connection in the engine compartment for the
deadlights. I should be able to buy some 12v light for it right?
I don't think the brakes are vacumn assisted, i guess i need to bleed
them extensively, i have to pump the pedal 3 times to get them to work.
Anyone able to make this serial out?

Actually the front and rear wheels should be the same, GM just used 5 studs
in the front axle. I belive there is a plate over the end of the hub so you
can't see the empty stud holes.

What is the best way to remove the old undercoating off the inside of my
fenders?
I have tried sandblasting but this is no good, grinding wire brushing off but
the undercoating is gooey and gets really messy. Has anyone tried a paint
remover to remove this or will it make an even bigger mess of this?

Subject: [oletrucks] Truck for sale
Saw an interesting truck for sale last Friday while playing hooky from work.
It was a '50 3800 one ton pickup. It is all original with massive home made
bumpers frond and rear. I have never seen a bed that long. It is in pretty
good shape with original running gear too. The owner (dealer) wants $3800
for it. I didn't think that was too bad for something you could drive away.

While on the subject of front shock mounts for TF trucks, I need a pair
(55-57 style) for my project. Does anybody have a front end from a clip
job that has the front shock brackets still attached? Or does a supplier
have them available?
