IT LIVES!!! Thanks to all who responded to my question on my dead 49. I'm still not sure what it was exactly, but I replaced the coil, cap and rotor and it fired right up. It still runs a wee bit rough because of the bum vacuum advance, but it least its back home in the garage where it belongs.
