Rob,
The narrow belt will work with the wide pulley, in a pinch, but you may have
to run it with more tension.
From the number you included, your engine is a 1953 216. BTW there is a very
nice casting number reference at
http://www.inliners.org/becks/index.htm?50,14
Which includes engine numbers prefixes and 216 casting numbers, which aren't
shown in the regular Inliners list.
For a correct pulley, you may want to contact Larrowe & Sons Truck Parts,

Subject: [oletrucks] crankshaft pulley
I've got a 49 Chevy with a 216 in it. I'm not sure what year the motor
is. My pulley on the crankshaft broke and so I headed to the local
junkyard only to find all the old chevys had wide belt pulleys on them.
Mine looks more like a contemporary one( about 1/2 inch. The pulley is
6" and the counter weight is about 6 3/8". Any ideas as to where I can
find one like this and what motor this is??There is a number next to my
distributor that is LBA1019761
