Several months ago I was contemplating using a dropped axle in our 49 3100.
I located Mor Drop in Oakland, via a search, and found their web page which
was nothing more than name and phone #. (I had it bookmarked, and just
tried it, but it's no longer valid) I called and received the following info:
2" drop is $250, 3" - $275, and 4" - $300, plus a $500 core charge if your
axle isn't useable.
I went out and did a little measuring under the truck and it became
apparent if I went with more than a 2" drop the tie rod would interfere
with the springs, thus you get into heating/bending steering arms, special
arms, or dropped tie rods etc. I decided against it and have installed a
IFS from a 77 GMC 1/2 ton.
I have no personal experience with the MAS axle, other than being
originally from the Twin Cities, where they're located, I recall their axle
was used under 55 Chevys, Willys, Mustangs, etc to gain height for weight
transfer at the drags. It did use the Chevy car spindles, which at the time
( early 60's) were easily found in good condition. I don't remember ever
seeing one under a street driven AD, which of course doesn't mean it hasn't
been done many, many times. They still advertise in the mags, so you might
give them a call.
