I'm not sure about the '54 ratio, but I have a 3.90 (outof a '62) in my 235 powered '48. I don't see much difference from the original 4.10. I got it for the 6 lug mounting and open drive shaft to go with my 3 speed OD. Overall, it comes out to about 2.80 in OD. It is OK on flat land, but steep hills require getting out of OD.
