Graphite works and was recommended in shop manual.
Eaton Detroit Spring makes excellent new springs from original blueprints.  
I've found their quality high.

The person with broken shackle pin, if it is a 3/4 ton or one ton rear 
shackle it is not threaded but plain.  NAPA has the replacement parts, 
although their catalog has an error, so they don't know what you need. I'll 
help with part numbers off list.  (This was from NAPCO list.)
