Hi Charles,
Is "Smokey" your nick name or your truck's?
I have the book for a '58, and I don't see any mention of a fuse between
the generator and the regulator. Do you need it? My truck has a later
alternator with a built in regulator, so I don't know what mine does.
But I found air gaps in the book:
single contact voltage regulators:
air gap: .075" between armature and center of core, when armature is
pressed down to make contact points touch.
double contact voltage regulators:
point opening between upper set of contacts should be .016
air gap should be .067 with the lower contacts touching, measuring
between armature and the winding core
If you know which kind of regulator you have, and need more info, I can
type out for you what the book has, but I've never messed with one of
these things before.
Good luck,
Ed Miller
