Modifying a stock vehicle has many opportunities for creativity and
craftsmanship, but brakes and suspension should be handled with extreme
respect, overkill even.
It only makes sense to err on the side of caution.
The part in question is a critical suspension component. This stud holds
the upper control arm in position, and if it breaks only the ball joint is
holding the control arms together. Failure at speed would be catastrophic.
With an OEM part, even used from a wrecking yard, you know it has been
designed and tested for its intended use.
If you replace it with a piece of hardware store material of dubious
origin, you had better ask yourself if you're feeling real lucky today.
