The amount of pollution and energy used to create the prius far exceeds that of
our classic cars. Let's not forget all those batteries that will eventually go
bad and need to be disposed of. Just because it doesn't produce a lot of smoke
out the tail pipe doesn't mean it isn't a gross polluter. Don't believe all the
hybrid hype.
Cheers,
Rich

Unfortunately, there are too many people on the planet.
When newer cars become so clean that hobby vehicles become a larger
percentage of total emissions we will get dinged. Most old cars pollute more
while parked than a Prius will in it's lifetime.

I just got this from John Quilter, a British car buff living in NYC,
but formerly a Bay Area resident. I sold my TR8 several years ago
because I was paranoid about running it sans cats. I rented a PO box
in Geyserville and the car was shown as living there, and so did not
have to get the two-year smog tests. However, I was always nervous
about doing this. But I could justify it as a wise thing to do as I
had heard too many stories of TR8 spontaneous combustions due to
white hot catalytic converters lighting up the cars.

Subject: New Nevada collector car law
This is a great step for the collector car hobby and kudos to the
legislature in Carson City for passing this. California remains
intractable on this issue, but you should keep up the pressure on
your legislators. Forwarded from Bob Stearns, the president of the
Association of California Car Clubs.

FYI ...I have been in working with SEMA on trying to get a
modified SEMA model Street Rod/Custom Car bill in California. Since
21 states have already implemented the bill or portion of, it is time
for California to take a good look at getting some version of the
bill. I will keep you updated on any progress. Nevada has recently
passed the following bill.
Nevada Bill to Exempt Hobby Cars from Emissions Tests Signed into Law
Nevada legislation (A.B. 2) to exempt classic vehicles and classic
rods from emissions inspections if owners pay a one-time $6 fee and
submit a certification that their vehicle will not be driven more
than 5,000 miles per year was signed into law by Governor Brian
Sandoval. Under previous law, classic rods and classic vehicles were
subject to a 2,500 mile per year limit to qualify for an emissions
exemption and had to pass an initial two-speed idle emissions
inspection to qualify. Also, each year the owners of classic rods and
classic vehicles were required to certify that their vehicles had not
been driven more than 2,500 miles during the previous year and the
certification had to be verified by a DMV emissions
technician. Under the new law, the initial emissions inspection is
no longer required.
My brother Dave (an ACCC member) worked for the Nevada Capitol Police
for over 12 years and knows his way around the Nevada state
legislature so I am going to try and get some more info on any of the
issues that may have came up on getting this bill signed into law.
Although California is much tougher on emissions than other states,
any helpful ideas won't hurt.
Thank you
Bob
