Bob,
I've simply used exterior plywood, coated with the wood preservative of your
choice, cupernol, or whatever. Give them a couple of coats of polyurethane
for good measure. You can stain them to whatever color you like. I'm sure
people will come up with all sorts of wood, marine ply, etc. etc. Exterior
seems to work fine though and is economical.
As far as your wiper motor, you might run a continuity tester around to see
what is going on.
