I once saw a man walking out one of those long piers with wooden decking
and he was intently counting. Every once in awhile he stopped and marked a
plank. i asked what he was doing and he said he was trying to get a
reliable estimate of the pier's length by counting the slits between the
planks. He was marking every 130th plank, as that was about 100 feet.
He was so intent on counting that he walked right off the end of the dock
into the water.
Anyone from Milwaukee could have told him; "When you're out of slits,
you're out of pier."
