+4/TR intake

Questions for the weekend:
I have a '61 +4 with the short intake manifold and H6 SU carbs. I 
would like to add a vacuum port to the manifold. The questions are: 
Where should the port be, at one of the  carbs or on the balance 
tube? Or can it be done at all?
Will replacing the  H6 with HS6 carbs  on the short manifold 
noticeably degrade performance?
