tire clearance

Greetings...                                                                    
        Having just returned from the Monterey Historics, I have a question.  
I looked at all the cars parked over by the Alfas, (off in the corner away 
from the regular cars) and all the cars with 60 spoke wire wheels were 
wearing 165's and one car was wearing 175's.  They all had as much or more 
clearance than my car.  My car, a 66 +4 with 60 spoke wheels, has less than 
1/4 inch clearance with 155's.  How did you guys do it?  I've checked the 
off-sets on 10 wheels and found them to be the same.  I'm trying not to buy 
SS  (or maybe +8 6x15 centerlace) wheels but it might to that.  Help!!!!!!!!
