Chip,
I have a '56 Plus 4 with 16" steel wheels that I'm wrestling with for tires.
I've tried to find a good replacement for the spider cracked 5.50-16 bias ply
Pirellis that were on it when we acquired the car. I'd like a radial. I
bought the Michelin XZX (?) 165x400 per Morgan Spares suggestion from Coker.
I couldn't find anyone to mount them as they were "not recommended" for the
wheel. Size and inner bead were the "concern". I called Michelin and spoke
with a product engineer who spoke with me without the normal "company line"
tone. He said that safety in cornering would be his concern. I know that
others have used this tire in this size without reservation. I couldn't make
it work. I returned the tires and am back at square one.
Three choices, I think.
1) Put on bias ply and be done. I know that the proper size is 5.00/5.25-16.
Not the best choice for handling and drivability, but not as expensive.
Something to be said for keeping the car close to "original" touring style.
2) Buy Michelin Pilote (?) in the 16" size. Greg Solow has told me that they
are a very noisy tire. Very expensive at around $280 ea., I think. (5 tires
= a bank loan...)
3) Replace the wheels with 15". I could go with wires, but I think that the
conversion is also pricey. Not original and I'm wondering if the '56 needs
the larger wheel for its "look". If I go with a non wire 15", then what to
keep the period look. This car will be a driver for enjoyment and some light
rallies. No track racing nor concours.
I see that you are replacing your wheels. Only for racing? I've not yet
looked at my wheels to see if they are OK. I'd like to decide on a tire
solution before dismounting the old tires, although the decision may be
influenced by the condition of the these wheels.
I've posted regarding my dilemma before with some helpful replies. As I'm
now starting over, I'd appreciate some more input.
Thanks in advance,
Steve Dreiseszun
