trailer weight

Hi all: I am starting the search for the new "family truckster" family car
and had the thought that it might be a good idea to get one at least capable
of towing a Morgan (plus 4) around, should the need arise. Since most of the
minivans we have been looking at have a towing capacity of about 3500 lbs, I
was wondering how much a typical open trailer weighed, and whether that
capacity would be sufficient for occasional towing?
