Gaiters - Front Susp

Hi All: 
What is the net wisdom regarding gaiters for the front susp.

Fred Sisson recommends fabricating gaiters for the rebound spring or
using a hidden O-ring to keeep things clean. In addition, Colin Musgrove
, in his book Moggie, recommends a coil bound pvc trunking in the
appropriate size for the main spring.

What is the overall wisdom here?
