John Twist's University Motors website (use any searcher to look for it) has
a good, step by step description of how to debug your voltage regulator (or
'control box' as the Brits would have it).
First, though, you really need to throw $9 for a volt-ohmmeter, as a test
lite will not get you there. You really need to see what kind of voltage
(and current) is present at the various points.
I did mine and found that it was, lo and behold, bad, replaced it with
another (my 4/4 is the same regulator as any Triumph or A-H) and was off and
running.
