nerfs- nerf bars - small uprights usually welded to the bumper brackets to
replace the bumpers. Probably derived from the push bars on the service trucks
used to 
start the "lakes" (dry ones, like Bonneville, etc.), racers. "...but she'll do
140 in the
top end..."
