The first thing to check is the fuel pump sediment bowl. If there is
considerable gunk present, dump the bowl and reinstall, turn the engine
(pump) over for a minute or two and if more gunk can then be found in the
bowl the problem is probably a rusty fuel tank. If so, just dumping the
sediment bowl will generally allow you to get home with the vehicle.
If the bowl stays relatively clean, the problem is likely a crudded up line
filter somewhere.
A weak coil is also high on the list of possible causes.
