WOW!
I can't believe the amount of interest in my mundane question about
serial numbers!!! Its Great!

What got me started in my quest is the CA Dept. of Motor Vehicles new
need for proof of insurance upon registration renewal. It turns out
that my insurance policy shows the engine number rather than chassis
number and the DMV has record of my chassis number (5077).

My car came to Calif. in a box when I moved to San Rafael from Salt Lake
City in 1975. When the car was completed a few years later I guess the
DMV believed my old Utah registration and never checked my numbers.

When I moved to Santa Barbara in 1985 and went to insure the car, I
could not find the chassis number to show them so we used the engine
number instead. Now I guess I need to straighten things out.

I spent the evening last night searching for numbers. If nothing else,
it was a good chance to see parts of the chassis I have not inspected
for years! The result is that I cannot see a number on the top of the
RIGHT (or left?) frame rail under the seat (many of the messages spoke
of "drivers side" and "passenger side" which could get confusing...). I
did find my "tub" number (3958) which is on the top of the wood
crossmember behind the seat back. On my car it is "Protected" by the
plywood floor of the boot area. This number was on the right side of
the car about 3" in from the wheel well plywood panel.

I'd like to find the chassis number however (it would make my trip to
the DMV much easier). I plan to scrape/sand off some of the rustoleum I
lathered on the frame so many years ago. Which side of the right
crossmember should I start sanding? Inboard near the transmission or
outboard near the jacking point?

I looked for the engine number on the bonnet hinge that some folks spoke
of, but did not find that either. Perhaps someone who has seen theirs
can give us more precise directions...

Anyway, thanks to everyone who responded to my question!
