On one of the lists, someone recently sent out a rather large file. I was
replying to the sender personally, thought it might be a good time to remind
folks of my feelings on the subject.
Yes, there is a size limit to list postings. A lot of folks just don't
realize how many machines a mail message has to go through, how many folks
have to pay for each message or for space to store them. Basically, sending
out anything more than a few paragraphs long is not a polite thing to do.
The best way to get the word out is:
Send a short message to the list saying you have [whatever_it_is] that is XXXX
bytes long, and offer to email it to those that ask.
FTP it to ftp.team.net, and tell folks where it is.
Email it to me, mjb@autox.team.net, and I can put it in the archive directory
for the appropriate list, so that folks can use the majordomo "index" and "get"
commands to fetch it themselves.
The bottom line, of course, is to use some common sense and consideration
when sending out a mail message to one of the lists. And speaking of sending
mail, I'll once again remind folks to send mail to list_name@autox.team.net,
and NOT send it to list_name-owner, or list_name-request. Send your subscribe
and unsubscribe commands to majordomo@autox.team.net, not your postings meant
for the whole list.
