Here's the deal with the steel. Chro-Moly tube has a better strength to
weight ratio than most mild steel alloys. Where there really is a gain over
mild steel, is in what we call the "dimple factor," or the willingness for the
tube to dent. We use .049 4130 tube and have had no problems. The only
reason you would have to port heat treat your welds is if you are using an
inappropriate rod or wire. ER70S2 is the appropriate TIG rod. I would stay
away from the MIG welding if possible as penetration is not as consistent.
The main goal of the rules is to keep cars within a certain safety factor.
The best done frames that I have seen in my four years of doing this have been
1.5" or 1.25" 4130. We kill our cars every year and our roll cage has never
once failed or even incurred damage and believe me, we have flipped and rolled
down some insane place. If anyone was watching us at the WEST competition
you'll know what I mean.
