  Once upon a time, when I was in retail trade in USA, there was a law that
required notification of customer if the order could not be shipped within a
specified period, with offer for cancellation and refund.    Retailers such as
LL Bean and Lands End are prompt to notify if they cannot ship immediately.
The law may still be in effect.Bob

Just curious about what other Listers think, so here's a question.

Do you think it's incumbent on a seller to notify a buyer if an ordered
item is being placed on back order?
