Exactly, which tends to defeat the object rather, except that the dipped
beam does usually take a little less current than main beam.
I'd also question the statement "Most relays have two sets of contacts" -
yes they exist, but you have to search them out, the most commonly available
auto relays only have a single normally open contact.
