Definitely not! Neither do you lift off the throttle, in fact you get
smoother changes with the throttle applied than with a trailing throttle,
the early ODs had a vacuum switch and relay arrangement so that it could
*only* be disengaged with the throttle on. Just flip the switch whenever
you want.
