I didn't think a muffler caused back-firing - isn't that carb-related?

Subject: [Mgs] muffler recommendations
I need a new muffler for my MGA. The inside rotted out of mine I think. It
sounded great for a long time but not it is backfiring when I let of the gas
and makes rattling noises.
Any suggestions for achieving a nice sounding, deep throated sound?
Thanks, Mike
