Looks like you are correct with the modern Volvos. Most of the definitions I
have seen include stop and go traffic as well, but Volvo doesn't. And
depending upon model/year, there is no mention of "normal" or "severe"
service and only one set of maintenance intervals.

Well for Volvo severe is defined as trailer towing in the mountains, taxi
and Police service. Under those conditions they suggest an oil change every
75,000 Km, roughly at the 52,500 mile service. This information is straight
from the owner's manual. So not too hard to be classified as normal.
