Well, I should know better than to get into an argument with Ed, but...
The surface area of the brake pad just doesn't enter into the equation.
Swept area only accounts for the diameter of the disc (inner and outer), and
the radial width of the pad.
If you disagree, then explain how you would calculate swept area INCLUDING
the surface area of the pad. I don't see how it could be done -- it doesn't
even make sense.
What it boils down to is, swept area is a measurement pertaining to the
effective size of the disc, NOT the size of the pad. For the pad size,
"friction area" will have to do. Two different things.
That's my argument and I'm standing by it <grin>
