The steering rod is in the way, it needs to be removed.
It's hard enough without the rod in the way. I suppose you
could try to mount the mount to the car before lowering the engine
onto it. But when I did it, I had the mounts attached to the engine.
Some people use the shim plates on a late car to lean the engine over
a bit so the foam air cleaners will fit on an SU conversion. Not sure
on the backing plate. I don't remember.
