Yes, I suppose you can do that. I'd be careful about grounding anything
floating around in the truck, which has a fair amount of metal in its
interior.
Larry's hoping to pick up the truck at the port, sail through customs, check
out some mechanicals, and hit the road from Baltimore to Oshkosh.
Back in the day (1974) I'd drive my Healey 100-6 with a Craig 8 track wired
directly to the battery, and the player isolated by placing it in a
cardboard box wrapped in a towel.
If something grounds out, and gets a direct short, Larry will have 39 year
old wiring glowing and melting all over his lap.

Couldn't you just reverse the two wires going into the cigarette lighter
plug? The inverter shouldn't care about the polarity of the car - all
it's got is two wires coming into it, as long as the +ve wire is really
+ve w.r.t. the negative wire it should be happy!
