I've been through this a few times, and while all the parts are available
for the re-build usually just the diodes in the reg is what's wrong.

If you don't have the equipment to do a load test the simple way to test alt
output is by putting the voltmeter on the bottom brown wire on the fuseblock
and measuring the voltage while it's running.  It should be 13.5-14.5 volts.

HOWEVER, before you check it you need to check the alt sensor before you
start the car.  Pull the plug off of the back and put the volt meter on the
center connection.  It should read whatever the battery's voltage is when
you turn the key.
