Steve,
I take the oilpan off and slide a 2X4 between the side of the block and the
crankshaft counterweights. That will only allow so much crank rotation.
If necessary, you can take the oilpan off while the motor is still in the
car, but it is a PITA. Good luck.

How do you stop the engine from rotating while trying to remove the bolt
securing the main pulley so as to access the timing chain cover?
