Thanks to everyone. After unsuccessfully trying to make science apply to
Lucas electrical wiring, I went back to the last time I had any brake light
problems and it turned out to be a ground issue. I hooked everything back
up, had my 11 yo daughter pumping the brake while I retested every
connection for a short and despite my lack of success with the Ohm meter,
the old pull, wiggle and twist method revealed an intermittent short in 1
ground wire after the split off the main ground in the rear. I subsequently
removed all bullet connectors (anger and frustration with it all) and at
10pm Ohio time took a quick ride around the neighborhood turn signals, brake
lights and running lights. I still don't understand how this ground wire
could cause the readings I was getting but I got my car back and am happy
again!
Now if I could get the new brake switch to stop
leaking...........................
