Definitely one of the ways a bad coil can act. If you have electronic
ignition, also could be a bad amp or incorrectly set air gap in the pickup.
If it has points, check that the points are OK and the gap is correct.

What are symptoms of a bad coil ? My car has been acting odd,
once warm it sputters and coughs at about 3,000rpm, if I slip it out of gear
allowing revs to drop to about 1,000 it is fine until it climbs back to
3,000. I changed condensor with no resulting change....
