I just noticed yesterday I have the same round blue thingy with one wire
next to my coil (towards the front of the car).  On the other side of
the coil (towards the fire-wall) is what I think is the ballast
resistor, in an aluminum heat-sink type of case.  Hope that helps.

Sounds like it's a noise suppressor. Mine is a blue color, about 1/2"
diameter. If so it connects to the dual male positive spade at the
coil.
As to the clock, very strange. Have you checked voltage at the clock
with
the car running and off?
