Couldn't you rig up some kind of variable resistor (pententimoeter/reostat) on the top of the piston to generate a voltage based on piston height? I seem to remember seeing a picture of some old wire arrangement sticking up through the plunger cap to mechanically indicate piston height. Maybe you could electrify something like that? Just my 2 cents worth.
