Thanks to Gordie, Rocky, Paul, and Bob for the info supplied to test for a
chronic battery drain on the desmogged 79B. I put on a new alternator last
week and the car died on me again.
I think I've narrowed it to a faulty NEW alternator (at O'Rielly's), but
would like to some help verifying this. Here's my test info:
Alt unplugged:
Ohmmeter on 2M setting, readings at alt. plug, first with red probe on plug
and black on ground-then reversing the probes:
brown/yellow-.003/.003 both browns-0/ 1.97 for a few seconds, then down
to 0.
Alternator plugged in, ignition off, car off:
Br/yellow-0 volts both browns-12.3V
Ignition on, car off.
Br/yellow-1.79V both brown-12V
Ignition on, car on
12.9V on all. 12.3V when lights on Revved car to 3000RPM with
little change.
I want to drive this car about 1000 miles to Kentucky to a wedding on the
23rd, so would appreciate any advice. (I ordered a replacement alternator
which will be in this Saturday).
Thanks,
Monte
