Yes, it's an older English term. When one had a large animal that was
at or past the end of its life, it was taken to the knacker for rendering
into hides, fats, hair (for felting), tail hair (bows for string
instruments), etc, and the process was called knackering. Americans are
more likely to say 'clapped out' or 'trashed'.
