Some of my Miata friends were talking about doing a dyno day. I talked
to Randy at Integrity Auto in Scotts Valley and he said that if a group
wanted to spend all day (8 hours) on the dyno some Saturday, he'd be
willing to do it for about $500.
This is an estimate, not a quote, details would be hashed out
later. If all you wanted to do was get a couple of dyno runs to find
out how much power your car puts to the ground, it'd be 40 minutes to
an hour (probably less, I'm being conservative). If you wanted to
actually do some tuning, it would take a bit more time.
Randy's dyno is a smog dyno rather than a performance dyno, so it
doesn't do the fancy multi-colored drawings, but it has the gas
analyzer and gives you everything you need for a real tuneup.
If we can get enough people together to make it worthwhile, I'd be
willing to organize it. It would be especially good if we collected
all of our spare carb needles and such (leaner needles actually
usually make more power BTW). Scotts Valley is about half an hour
south of San Jose.
I'll guess that just a dyno profile would cost $60, and a "simple
tune" would cost about $100. More advanced tuning would cost more.
The biggest problem with Randy's dyno is that it only sends data out
the parallel port to a printer. I'd like to get a parallel to serial
converter and capture it to a laptop for analysis via spreadsheets and
the like. Unfortunately, I'm too busy at the moment, so if this sounds
like a fun project to you, let me know, and I'll discuss the details
with you.
