Could that friction material you mentioned be the magnet material in place
on the cover of the sump in order to catch and retain ant metal filings or
bits during normal operation.   Also, I need more of a description of your
overdrive sluggishness.  Depending on you specific description, I may be
able to offer some suggestions.
