There should be a clearance between rotor arm and cap, it is the spark
jumping the gap that causes the black burning. If yours looks like it is
being hit it implies a very worn distributor shaft and/or bearing, can you
wobble the shaft from side to side? It usually gives wobbly timing too.
Firing 'fairly' well also bothers me, unless it is consistent and regular
there is something wrong.
