Bill:
The Volvo engine depreciates the value of the MGA. It should also make it a
bit faster.
As for how much less it's worth, consider for a minute that there are 3 other
MGA's in various conditions with original engines for sale in the $4,000 to
$12,000 range. How much lower than each of these would you be willing to pay
to get part of an MGA? And, how much harder will it be to sell when that time
comes?
I once looked at a TD with a Volvo engine. The owner was asking about half of
what comparable TD's were selling for. Yet it took many months to sell.
Caveat emptor!
BUT, if there has been no cobbling, you should be able to find a 1500 engine
at a reasonable price. Install it & have a more valuable car. MG buyers
haven't gotten "matching numbers" crazy like Vette people. So, you should be
okay.
